In patients undergoing radical nephrectomy (RN) for renal cell carcinoma, robotic surgery seems to offer some key advantages compared to open surgery, including shorter hospitalization and fewer complications. Robot-assisted RN provides similar surgical outcomes to laparoscopic RN, but at higher total costs. These results should be interpreted within the limitations of this type of analysis. Randomized clinical studies with long-term follow-up are needed to obtain more definitive evidence.

Abstract

In patients undergoing radical nephrectomy (RN) for renal cell carcinoma, robotic surgery seems to offer some key advantages compared to open surgery, including shorter hospitalization and fewer complications. Robot-assisted RN provides similar surgical outcomes to laparoscopic RN, but at higher total costs. These results should be interpreted within the limitations of this type of analysis. Randomized clinical studies with long-term follow-up are needed to obtain more definitive evidence.
